| There are multiple consequences of untreated varicose
veins. First and foremost, patients will experience continued symptoms
of pain, fatigue and swelling of the legs. More advanced medical
problems may include hyperpigmentation (discoloration), lipodermosclerosis
(change in texture of the skin becoming hardened), venous leg ulcers
(breakdown in the skin), spontaneous bleeding, superficial thrombophlebitis
(infection in clotted veins), and a potentially life-threatening
problem called deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
